LED HAIR TREATMENT

LED’s have a wide range of applications in dermatology due to their role in reducing inflammation and stimulating the underlying tissues. But LEDs can also be used to advantage in the treatment of alopecia.

What is an LED?

An LED (Light Emitting Diode) is a light-emitting diode formed by an optoelectrical component that allows the emission of monochromatic light.  LED’s offer the possibility to emit several ranges of light wavelengths such as red, yellow, blue, green and violet, each of which has a specific medical function. For example, the blue color will be used against acne and dermatosis. By changing the settings of the wavelengths, the strength of the light produced can be calibrated.

To stimulate hair growth, LED phototherapy is used.

What is the principle of LED phototherapy?

The principle of phototherapy is based on the action of a light source similar to that of the sun directed towards the scalp or the area to be treated. Phototherapy or LED hair loss treatment will stimulate the hair bulb and help the hair grow back. When the patient stands under the LED lamps, the cold light rays of the LEDs, whose specific wavelengths penetrate to the deep dermis where the bulbs are located, will provide all the energy necessary for the hair cells to grow back. This action of the LED :

strengthens the hair follicles,

tones the hair,

strengthens them,

slows down hair loss,

– and stimulates hair growth

LED’s for hair loss will have red and yellow wavelengths.

How does the phototherapy treatment session work?

LED hair loss treatment is non-invasive, painless and has no side effects. The LED lights do not come in direct contact with the skin, but wearing glasses is recommended. There are several models of LED devices, but they all follow the same principle: some devices look like a helmet that the patient will wear while others look like several rectangles with adjustable axis, equipped with several hundred LED’s.

Red and infrared light are ideal for treating alopecia and give real results on hair growth. Low frequency laser therapy uses a cold red light that penetrates the surface of the skin without creating heat, thus avoiding the risk of burns and causing no damage to the skin. This light is then converted into chemical energy that will promote hair regeneration.

What are the results of LED treatment?

It is important to understand that the results obtained depend on the hair cycle which is very slow. This means that the hair loss can only be stopped between 2 and 4 months after the LED treatment. The results are therefore sure, but it will take 6 to 8 months to see the appearance of hair growth after the treatment.

Because of this slow regrowth of hair, several sessions are necessary to maximize the results. In general, LED treatment for hair loss requires 1 to 2 sessions per week for 2 months and then a follow-up session every 15 days for 2 months to achieve optimal results.
